History of Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium
Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium’s dedication to creating a harmonious human-nature relationship and remarkable growth in attendance, exhibitry, research, education, and conservation efforts over the past decades are distinguishing it from other competitors and sending it roaring into the future.
More than a century ago, philanthropist Christopher Lyman Magee donated $125,000 for the construction of a zoological garden in Pittsburgh’s Highland Park neighborhood. On June 14, 1898, the Pittsburgh Zoo opened its gates to the public, providing visitors with a rare glimpse of animals and plants they had never seen before. Fitting in with the paradigm of the day, the Zoo resembled more of an animal menagerie than it does today. Through the years, however, the Zoo has transformed itself, incorporating naturalistic habitats for a great variety of species, as well as becoming a resource for conservation, education, and research.
The Zoo’s Master Plan for recent renovations began in 1980. The next decade completely transformed the Zoo. Exhibits were recreated into naturalistic habitats, enabling animals to roam as they would in the wild while providing a more pleasant and informative experience for Zoo visitors. The Asian Forest, which opened in 1983, was the first area of the Zoo to utilize this new philosophy. The African Savanna followed, featuring seven major exhibits in an African landscape, opening in 1987.
In 2015, the Zoo proudly unveiled The Islands, a 22,000-square-foot exhibit that offers an immersive island atmosphere with cascading waterfalls, ponds, and the unique sounds of endangered animals. Featuring animals native to island atmospheres around the world, including Philippine crocodiles, Aldabra tortoises, Visayan warty pigs, siamangs, and clouded leopards, the area also offers a beach with sand, beach umbrellas, and an oversized Adirondack chair. In 2017, the Zoo opened Jungle Odyssey, featuring five new animal exhibits including fossas, capybaras, ocelots, giant anteaters, and a pygmy hippo set amongst jungle foliage.

After all, conservation is at the core of everything we do.
Research & Innovation
Over the past decade, the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium has supported over 245 projects in 61 countries. The PPG Conservation and Sustainability Fund is a grant program of the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium that awards grants between $1,000 and $3,000 to conservation-oriented projects.
While the program particularly encourages field studies and cross-disciplinary approaches to conservation, a wide variety of projects are considered. If you would like to conduct a project outside of the United States, evidence of strong local involvement must be presented.
The 2020 grant application cycle is now CLOSED.
PPG Conservation & Sustainability Fund
The PPG Conservation and Sustainability Fund is a grant program of the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium, awarding grants between $1,000 and $3,000 to conservation-oriented projects. Over the past decade the PPG Conservation and Sustainability Fund has supported over 204 projects in 56 countries.
Most recently, the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium partnered with several accredited organizations to participate in the rescue of ten stranded manatees from the chilling waters of Charleston, South Carolina.
Typically, the manatees in this region travel south before the winter season but unfortunately, these ten manatees never made the trip.
The operation took place over three days. The rescued manatees were transported to Florida, where health assessments deemed nine manatees as releasable and one female as needing continued veterinary care for mild cold stress.
Preservation efforts like this help support the conservation of endangered and threatened species from Africa to South Carolina – and everywhere in between. And the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium is honored to play an active role in these wildlife conservation efforts both locally and around the globe.
